Children who attend Camp Abilities Long Island must fit the following criteria in order to be eligible for camp:
- They must have a visual impairment (they must have a vision teacher).
- They are predominantly independent (helping with shoe-tying, bathing, using the toilet, and/or picking clothes is okay).
- They possess verbal or sign communication skills appropriate within 2 years of their age.
- They display behaviors that allow them to function in a group setting that does not affect other group members;
- They must NOT run away (this is a college campus and this behavior is dangerous for everyone. Any child who runs away must be sent home immediately).
- They must not kick, punch, bite or display any violent behaviors or tendencies.
- They must not display defiant behavior (this includes refusing to stand in line, to participate in a variety of activities, or to abide by bed time).
- They do not possess a medical problem that requires a nurse for constant supervision (we have one nurse and 25 campers; we cannot afford to have a child that requires all of their time).
- Parents must disclose ALL necessary information that will allow us to provide a safe environment for their child over the three day period.
If there are any questions regarding the above criteria, please contact the directors at campabilitieslongisland@gmail.com.
